The home owner was looking to re-vamp their existing outdoor entertaining area and wanted a mix of seating space as well as lawn area for the dog. Having just removed several large trees along the fence they were also looking for a privacy solution.
The challenge in this yard was maximizing the amount of usable space with what was available. There was an existing Rhododendron plant that held significant value to the home owner. Not only was it imperative that we work around the tree but also incorporate it into the design as a center piece; in which both were achieved.
- Create outdoor dining and outdoor lounging areas
- Create lawn space for family dog
- Create privacy solutions along the fence
- Use existing Rhododendron plant as a centerpiece within the space
After removing the existing wood deck, a new bi-level composite deck was installed with the upper level offering plenty of room for the outdoor dining and BBQ area. We added a louvered screen to the side of the deck which added to the aesthetics and intimacy of the space while achieving privacy along the fence.
The lower level deck extends with a boardwalk leading over the dry creek bed to a smaller round seating area for lounging in front of the fire. We added boulders to the existing rock bubbler to create a decent volume of relaxing background waterfall acoustic. Completing the design we softened the new deck space with Blue Arrow Junipers and Karl Foerster Grasses.
The finishing touches are what complete this relaxing and intimate design, including the double picture frame border on the lower deck and the feature lights installed in the steps connecting the upper and lower spaces.
Two years later the home owner decided to add more privacy to the back yard but was looking for something different from a wall or screen.
Reflecting the style of the owners home décor, a unique art piece was designed using a combination of metal and wood. This unique texture added a whole new element to the space.
The privacy piece was installed on the lower deck with a matching arbour installed, complementing the overall design of the space and framing the rear entrance of the yard.
The design style of this project is Modern-Contemporary. The bold lines and angles of the deck cut into the perfect circle
formed by the planting beds and lawn.
